Hey guys.. While in AL for the Holidays, I visited with an old band-mate.. best-friend from High School. I mentioned to him that I've gotten into DIY stuff this year. So, he goes into his music room and comes back with a Boss Compression/Sustainer CS-3 pedal. He says that it sounds great with some gain and dirt, but way too weak and tinny with a clean signal. He told me to dabble and see if there's any mods that I could try on it.. said I could bring it back next Christmas. I put it between my Esquire and Ghia last night.. set all four pots to noon. Surprisingly, I liked what it did.. leveled the string-to-string volume and added a hint of fatness.. without destroying my dynamics... What do you guys think of Compression pedals? Do you keep them "always on", or just "on" for certain situations?

I like em if used sparingly...I really don't like that squashed sound...a little goes a long way. That being said I haven't used one in a long time. If I were to get a new one today it would likely be the Wampler or Barber Tone Press. Both of those sound real good to my ears and feature the blend knob which would allow me to choose how much "comp" comes through. Ok, I have to stop or I will get GAS or something along that line...lol

Well...since you ask...lol...I love my aNaLoG.MaN Bi-Comprosser on my big board, and Juicer on my small board. I don't use them all the time. Mostly on clean stuff. It make the note big and FAT and adds a little more sparkle. I like the Juicer for single coils and I have the Ross side of the Bi-Comp for Humbuckers. Works for me!

Thanks Mark and Mark.. so, Mark (T).. I've read up on the Bi-Comp and Juicer. How do you think they contrast from each other tone-wise? And, why does the Juicer favor Single-coils, in your opinion? ;D

And, why does the Juicer favor Single-coils, in your opinion? ;D The CompRosser is more pure and smooth, true to the original guitars tone, while the Juicer is slightly thicker and squeezes the notes more...hence "Orange Squeezer" . The Ross is more adjustable so you can adjusted it for more powerful pickups.."humbuckers"...and the Juicer just craves that single coil tone to fatten it up some. ...think Sultans of Swing"

I have had a Keeley 2 knob compressor and the CompRosser is much better, in my opinion. Smoother, more control and adds a tad more sparkle. That may or may not be better to your ears. I've never tried a Boss CS-3, but the Juicer evens out everything, yes....and starts compressing at any volume. The knob is just a volume. There is an internal control, but I've never tinkered with it. Hope that helps. ...

Thanks Mark! I may order a Juicer this week.. we'll see. I can keep my friend's CS-3 until I decide to modify it.. I'm surprised how well I like it right now, though. So, that makes me excited to grab a high quality and reputable compressor. I don't need it right away.. but I want it.

I didn't really need the Wampler [yet], but I'm getting a great deal from a guy over at TGP.

Ego Comp arrived today! I'll create an "Ego Comp" thread after I've played with it a little...
Looks great! The sparkly blue finish is much nicer in person. ;D
