I have always wanted to buy one of them big fat necks from Warmoth or USACG and finish it in tru-oil... but have shy'd away because I'd have to get the nut made and/ or fine finished at a luthier increasing overall cost.
Any of you guys cut your own nut? How tough is it?

Any of you guys cut your own nut? How tough is it? When I built my USACG Esquire, my guitar tech cut and installed a bone nut as part of the final set-up. I just paid for his time and materials. If I was planning to cut my own, I'd obtain all of the specific tooling required; files, vices, etc... www.stewmac.com/shop/Nuts,_saddles.html

I've not cut my own nut before, merely given it a touch up when setting up the guitar. Although I have a Warmoth neck and the graphite nut it came with was already pretty good. I only needed to give the B or G (it was ages ago) slot a tiny bit of attention to stop the string binding.

Never cut my nut, but came close once. I was sitting down cutting boxes for recycling when I dropped the box cutter. Landed right between my thighs. I now stand when using a box cutter. Seriously, StewMac would be the place I'd start looking for tools and info.
