Hey everyone, just wanted to share a project I put together back in 2004. The first amp I ever built was a little champ kit that I got from Allen Amps, but this time around I was being stubborn, and decided I wanted to build a 5f6-a Bassman on my own, without buying a kit. Basically just making a parts lists, and purchasing from differents internet vendors what I needed.
My background is basically that I'm a Journeyman Wireman Electrician..which in no way qualifies me an amp tech, but I felt confident enough that I could do it, with the proper research. I started out by getting Gerald Webers Desk Top Reverence guide, reading and studying the schematics, and doing alot of reading on Hoffmans Amp Forum.
It was nice to be able to purchase the amp basically in sections, do the chassi first, then get a cab, then get speakers...total cost was probably about the same as if I'd just went out and bought a new reissue Fender, but like I said, I was stubborn, I wanted to learn some, and build one on my own.
Originally, I had used spraque orange drop caps in the the tone, and coupling caps, but a few months ago, I got some sozo caps, just for kicks...subtle difference I suppose. Overall, I'd say it sounds pretty good, really didn't have any issues putting it together, and it more or less fired up the first time. I did add a Bias pot in it for convenience.
I dont think I'd ever sell it, cause I'd just lose my butt on it, and
figured it just be something cool for the Kids to look at and say hey, "Dad built this..wow" ya, know..when I'm long gone. On the inside of the back panel, I put my name, the year I built it, and the names of all the companies that I got the parts, speakers, cab from. Just figured years, and years, and years from now, someone might getta kick outta knowing its history, and how it came to be.
anyway, just wanted to add to the Village, and share...if anyone else has any homebrews, please share..Mike:)
